How a swamp cooler works
A swamp cooler is a machine that uses evaporation to make an air stream that is cooler than the surrounding air. Swamp and evaporative air coolers have a few main parts: a water tank, a wick to absorb water from the tank and a fan to blow air over the wick while it evaporates water.

When the water tank is filled with water, place the bottom of the wick into the water. The wick draws water from the tank and becomes saturated. A fan located behind the wick blows air over it and out into the room. As the air blows over the wick, the water evaporates, creating a cooling effect on the temperature.

Swamp or evaporative air coolers work best in dry climates; they are not effective in climates with a high humidity since they rely on water evaporation to produce cooling. Swamp coolers do humidify the air and are not recommended for cooling servers or electrical equipment.

How Negative Ion Air Purifiers Work
Most particles in the air carry a positive charge, while fewer particles can carry a negative charge (negative ions). Negative ions and particles with positive charge are magnetically attracted to one another. When there are enough negative ions in the air, they will be attracted to these floating particles (often pollutants or irritants). This causes the particle to become too heavy to remain airborne making it fall out of the air, preventing it from being inhaled into the respiratory tract where it can trigger breathing and health problems. The ionized particle will be collected by normal cleaning activities, like vacuuming or dusting.
