MCS-System is made up of 3 mm thick Koto and 6mm Balsa layers of various widths that are block glued and afterwards cut across for an unbelievable stabilizing middle layer. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was formed in Berlin in 1926 to set and standardize the rules of this relatively new sport. There are specific requirements concerning the composition of the blade and the rubber and foam covering, but the otherwise the rules state: "The racquet may be of any size, shape, or weight but the blade shall be flat and rigid". The interpretation of these parameters has resulted in unlimited choice of blades and paddles on the market today.

Once the blade is selected, there is the matter of the rubber, or rubbers. These too are available in several configurations, each giving a different result.
